Stone Walling / Stone Facing
Dry stone walls are free standing structures built without mortar using smaller stones to pack between the stone faces. The majority of Devon's dry stone walls are found on Dartmoor
Stone facing is a term which describes a stone faced bank where soil rather than stone is used to pack behind the wall face. many of Devon's characteristic hedges are stone faced banks
Both types of wall create shelter and habitat for a range of birds, animals and plants and have been used to form boundaries in this country for thousands of years
